Robert Sylvester Kelly (Chicago, Illinois, 8 de janeiro de 1967) , cantor, compositor e produtor musical conhecido internacionalmente pela designação artística R. Kelly.
Conquistou sucesso como líder vocal do grupo “Public Announcement” em 1992. No final dos Anos 90 lançou o álbum de maior vendas da carreira, “R.” (1998), que contém canções como “I’m Your Angel”, com a participação de Celine Dion, “If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time” e “I Believe I Can Fly“. Tornou-se um dos artistas melhores artistas no estilo R&B entre a década de 90 e início dos anos 2000, seu alter-ego permite considerar-se “The King of R&B“. R. Kelly é conhecido por sua sonoridade gospel e letras altamente sexuais.
R. Kelly nasceu no subúrbio americano de Southside Projects, em Chicago, filho caçula entre as quatro crianças de Joanne Kelly, em 1967. A mãe cultivou o interesse do filho por esportes e música desde o ensino fundamental para afastá-lo de qualquer possível envolvimento com as gangues de tráfico de drogas da região. O jovem dedicou a infância à participação em shows de talento e campeonatos de basquetebol. A grande chance surgiu em 1990 quando cantou em um churrasco de amigos. Entre os convidados estava Wayne Williams, um representante da gravadora Jive Records. Ele gostou da apresentação e convidou Kelly para ingressar em carreira profissional.
O cantor foi apresentado a outros três jovens que fariam parte de um novo grupo, chamado “Public Announcement”. O álbum de estréia do quarteto chegou às lojas em 1992 sobre o título “Born Into the ’90s” e espalhou grandes sucessos nos Estados Unidos, como “She’s Got that Vibe” e “Slow Dance”.
O destaque de R. Kelly entre os demais integrantes do grupo fez com que ele fosse lançado em carreira solo um ano depois, com o álbum “12 Play”, que incluiu o primeiro número um da carreira dele, “Bump n’ Grind”. Em 1995, o casamento ilegal dele com a também cantora Aaliyah (1979 – 2001) gerou polêmica no país. A jovem, com apenas 15 anos de idade, teria apresentado documentos falsos para conseguir oficializar o matrimônio com Kelly, que já tinha 18 anos completos. O casamento foi anulado assim que o escândalo foi publicado na revista Vibe no início daquele ano.
R. Kelly começou a ganhar credibilidade como produtor depois de escrever e compor a canção “You Are Not Alone” para Michael Jackson em 1995. No mesmo ano, o cantor lançou o segundo álbum solo, que levava o próprio nome, R. Kelly. O disco conquistou sucesso ainda maior que o anterior, colocando em primeiro lugar três músicas: “You Remind Me of Something”, “Down Low” e “I Can’t Sleep Baby”.
O maior sucesso da carreira veio com o terceiro lançamento, R. (1998), um ambicioso álbum duplo composto por 28 canções escritas e produzidas por ele. O disco vendeu oito milhões de cópias somente nos Estados Unidos e contém canções como “I’m Your Angel”, com a participação de Celine Dion, “If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time” e “I Believe I Can Fly”, selecionada para fazer parte da trilha-sonora do filme Space Jam: O Jogo do Século, estrelado por Michael Jordan e pelo personagem dos quadrinhos Pernalonga (voz de Billy West), da Looney Tunes.
Kelly ganhou o primeiro Grammy da carreira por “I Believe I Can Fly” (“Canção R&B do Ano”) em 1998. Na mesma cerimônia ele ganhou ainda os prêmios de “Desempenho Vocal R&B” e “Trilha-Sonora”.
No auge do processo criativo, R. Kelly trabalhou com Janet Jackson (“Any Time, Any Place”), Jennifer Lopez (“Baby I Love U”), Toni Braxton (“I Don’t Want To”), Britney Spears (“Outrageous”), Ja Rule e Ashanti (“Wonderful”), B2K (“Bump, Bump, Bump”) e Joe (“More and More”), Kirk Franlkin ( Lean On Me ).
Em 2000, R. Kelly ainda lançou um quarto álbum de sucesso, TP-2.Com, que tinha como proposta resgatar as letras sexuais e quase pornográficas do primeiro lançamento do cantor, 12 Play (1993). A canção “Fiesta”, com participação do rapper Jay-Z, figura como a canção mais conhecida do disco.
